Dear P
A tough day. I went to sleep quickly but woke at 2.00pm in a mess. I'm fretting about my funeral address, hoping that I will do justice to you and not make me look a fool.
Over breakfast your mum broached the subject of your dad giving his own eulogy. I was more than happy to agree. What right have I to deny him.
You would have loved today. The weather was beautiful, clear blue skies and warm sunshine. You would have used it well by doing some painting before going for a walk. We made the most of it by sitting outside and awaiting the arrival of Bill Boyd the Minister to discuss funeral arrangements. Although I know him this was his first meeting with you mum and dad. With impeccable style he began by announcing that as a youngster he had supported Middlesex Cricket Club and had idolised Dennis and Leslie Compton. Your dad was made over.
It proved a cathartic meeting for all. Bill had himself lost his wife to cancer some years ago. He feels it will take a couple of years before I begin to feel any sense of equilibrium. Aside from discussing the mechanics of the funeral, he gave his whole hearted support to our involvement. His positive view has helped to strengthen my resolve that I should say a few words. I know it will be tough, but it is the right thing to do.
By way of some light relief, at lunchtime I went to play a few holes of golf before going to meet with Banjo, who is designing the insert to your order of service. Using photographs of you, which he scanned from our photograph albums, he is going to combine them with images of your paintings. It looks brilliant and just adds another personal touch.
Much love
M
